The list of victims of embarrassing cybersecurity breaches has included some of the biggest names in American business: Target, Sony, and Home Depot. But in recent weeks the most devastating victims of hackers have been law firms- including Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Weil Gotshal & Manges. Even the high profile Panama Papers leaks came from a law firm.
The result is a wave of negative publicity that is forcing law firms to reconsider how they do business in the digital age. As the volume and complexity of client data proliferates, protecting client confidentiality only becomes harder. Unfortunately, law firms are often soft targets for hackers because they do not invest heavily in information technology infrastructure and security. However, these are some fundamental tactics and strategies that can help make any legal organization a harder target for hackers and spies.
