Chris Dale of the UK-based eDisclosure Information Project says the political and economic impact of the Brexit- a referendum pushing the UK to leave the European Union- will be disastrous. “Those who initiated this process have no clue and had no plan about what to do now because I don’t believe they ever expected to win,” says Dale. “Turmoil is a good word for what’s about to happen.”
But as a litigation and e-discovery expert in the UK, he believes it will likely be a boon to e-discovery consultants and attorneys – at least for a while. “In the short run, turmoil will likely be positive. Regulatory details, mergers and acquisition, cross border disputes, transactional work, and all kinds of legal work will be in high demand as there will be massive legislative efforts to untangle the current legal framework,” he says.
However, there are looming negative outcomes that could darken the legal industry landscape. On his blog, Dale suggests that if law firms leave the UK for nations still in the European Union, heavy litigation which supports much of the UK eDiscovery industry may dry up. “Big London litigation will not die, but nor is it likely to grow as a major source of new work,” he wrote.
