Five Great Reads on Cyber, Data, and Legal Discovery for January 2025

ComplexDiscovery Staff

The January 2025 issue of the ComplexDiscovery OÜ newsletter examines the critical intersections of cybersecurity, information governance, and eDiscovery as global industries face unprecedented opportunities and challenges. This month’s features delve into the transformative role of artificial intelligence, the persistent risks of cyberattacks across critical sectors, and the economic and strategic trends reshaping the digital landscape. By exploring where technological advancements meet global complexities, this edition provides actionable insights for professionals navigating today’s rapidly evolving environment.

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries, it brings both transformative opportunities and significant risks to the forefront of global discourse. At the 2025 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, the release of the AI and Cybersecurity: Balancing Risks and Rewards report highlighted the urgency of addressing AI’s vulnerabilities alongside its benefits. Developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford’s Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre, the report provides strategies for aligning technological advancement with robust cybersecurity measures. AI’s capabilities to automate processes and improve decision-making are undeniable, but its expanded attack surface has made it a double-edged sword. Threat actors are leveraging AI to refine their methods, from automated reconnaissance to sophisticated attacks like data poisoning, which can compromise critical systems ranging from financial fraud detection to healthcare diagnostics. These challenges underscore the necessity of a proactive approach to managing AI’s risks.

Amid this broader technological shift, the legal industry is finding its footing in the era of data-driven transformation through initiatives like Legal Data Intelligence (LDI). Launched in May 2024 at the CLOC Global Institute, LDI aims to organize and leverage the vast amounts of data generated within legal practices. With milestones such as the development of its foundational model, a growing online presence, and the publication of key whitepapers, the initiative reached a pivotal moment during its January 2025 kickoff event in Fort Lauderdale. This gathering of legal and technological experts emphasized innovation, collaboration, and actionable strategies to harness data for improving legal operations.

Meanwhile, cybersecurity challenges continue to make headlines, with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) confronting new allegations of a breach by a hacker group known as IntelBroker. These claims, posted on BreachForums in mid-January 2025, suggest unauthorized access to sensitive corporate data. HPE’s investigation, while ongoing, has thus far found no operational disruptions or evidence of customer data exposure. This incident illustrates the persistent threats even established tech companies face as they navigate an increasingly complex digital landscape.

In Europe, healthcare has emerged as a critical focus area for cybersecurity. The European Commission’s Action Plan on the Cybersecurity of Hospitals and Healthcare Providers addresses vulnerabilities within one of the most frequently targeted sectors in recent years. Digital tools like AI-driven diagnostics and electronic health records have revolutionized patient care, but they have also created new risks for disruption and data theft. By prioritizing the protection of hospitals and healthcare systems, this initiative underscores the essential role of cybersecurity in safeguarding critical infrastructure.

Education has also found itself in the crosshairs of cybercriminals, with PowerSchool, a leading provider of education software, experiencing a significant data breach in late 2024. The incident exposed sensitive information, including names, addresses, and potentially Social Security numbers, highlighting vulnerabilities in the systems relied upon by schools worldwide. As investigations continue, the breach serves as a reminder of the importance of securing data in sectors traditionally less equipped to fend off sophisticated attacks.

The eDiscovery market, too, is evolving in response to data growth, regulatory changes, and technological advancements. ComplexDiscovery’s 2024-2029 eDiscovery Market Size Mashup projects the market to grow from $16.89 billion in 2024 to $25.11 billion by 2029, reflecting the increasing complexity of data-intensive workflows and the rise of AI-driven solutions. The report provides a detailed look at trends in spending, geographic shifts, and task allocation, offering stakeholders a roadmap for navigating this dynamic industry.

Elsewhere, cybersecurity’s global implications were starkly illustrated by a breach at the U.S. Treasury Department in December 2024. Exploiting a third-party software vulnerability, Chinese state-sponsored hackers gained access to unclassified workstations, raising alarms about the susceptibility of federal systems to foreign threats. The incident underscores the critical need for stronger defenses, particularly against supply chain vulnerabilities.

Innovation in cybersecurity also extends to protecting physical infrastructure, as demonstrated by the deployment of Nordic Warden, an AI-powered maritime surveillance system. Developed through the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force, this system aims to safeguard Northern Europe’s undersea infrastructure against sabotage and accidents. Recent incidents, including interference with the Estlink2 cable in the Baltic Sea, have reinforced the urgency of such measures, particularly amid the region’s heightened geopolitical tensions.

As industries grapple with the challenges of digital transformation, the economic landscape and strategic investments play a pivotal role in shaping their trajectory. The eDiscovery sector, for instance, recorded significant mergers and acquisitions in 2024, reflecting a strong alignment between economic growth and the increasing complexity of regulatory demands. Recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis also revealed robust economic fundamentals, including a 3.1% GDP growth in Q3 2024, which supported heightened M&A activity across industries

Finally, the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War continues to provide a stark reminder of the interplay between physical conflict and digital strategy. Recent developments, including Ukraine’s energy diplomacy with Moldova and Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics, highlight how modern conflicts are fought across multiple domains. These events offer lessons not only for policymakers but also for cybersecurity and information governance professionals tasked with addressing the challenges of an interconnected world.

From AI and eDiscovery to cybersecurity and global conflict, the evolving landscape of technology, data, and security is reshaping industries and geopolitical dynamics alike. The insights from these developments underscore the importance of vigilance, innovation, and collaboration in navigating the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
