Metrics. The word alone sends chills down the spine of most attorneys. But metrics – defined as a standard for measuring something usually with figures or statistics – are often the best way to get to the heart of the most important legal questions: Should we pay or settle the claim? How much should we be willing to spend to defend the case? How much data is implicated by the matter?
Lawyers will never be statisticians. But those who embrace the important role metrics have in the legal process, most notably during e-discovery, often find themselves in a much better position to make important case decisions much more quickly and decisively than their number-fearing peers.
