A short assessment of the qualitative benefit of the recent announcement by Relativity of new AI solutions during its 14th annual users conference in Chicago.

Editor’s Note:  The unveiling of aiR for Review at the company’s annual Relativity Fest could be considered a Festivus Miracle for many in the legal community. The AI-powered review tool promises to significantly accelerate document review, one of the most tedious and time-consuming aspects of litigation and investigations.

For cybersecurity teams, solutions like the announced Relativity Data Breach Response could significantly reduce the time and effort required to assess and respond to breaches. By quickly analyzing large volumes of data, AI can help identify impacted individuals and build notification lists to meet legal deadlines.

Also, information governance professionals can now begin to leverage a new solution, Relativity Personal Information Detect, to accurately find sensitive data like PII and PHI. This allows organizations to better protect confidential data and comply with privacy regulations. Automating personal data detection reduces the risk of breaches due to human error.

The launch of these AI capabilities demonstrates that solutions for automating data analysis are maturing from research projects to practical tools. However, thoughtfully governing these tools and their outputs remains imperative. Relativity’s focus on responsible AI adoption provides a model for technology leaders in these fields.

CHICAGO – Legal technology leader Relativity unveiled new artificial intelligence capabilities this week aimed at transforming legal discovery and investigations for its users. The AI-powered products were announced during the company’s 14th annual Relativity Fest user conference.

The highlight was Relativity aiR for Review, the company’s first tool leveraging the GPT-4 natural language model. Built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI, aiR for Review analyzes legal documents and highlights the most important information to aid human reviewers.

Relativity CEO Phil Saunders said aiR for Review will provide substantially faster, higher-quality insights compared to traditional manual review workflows. The AI assistant can quickly locate responsive documents, identify relevant legal issues, and surface key documents for attorneys.

“With aiR for Review, users can tap into the power of AI to get to the facts of their case faster than ever before,” said Saunders during his keynote presentation.

Relativity aiR for Review also explains its recommendations by citing evidence and rationale from documents, allowing human reviewers to validate the AI’s work. This focus on transparency and explainability is core to Relativity’s responsible AI development approach.

The company emphasized that it developed aiR for Review collaboratively with its extensive user community to address real-world pain points, not hype. Since its founding, Relativity has cultivated trust by building AI that solves legal teams’ needs.

Jim Calvert, Principal at Relativity client Troutman Pepper eMerge, called the new aiR for Review technology “a potential game-changer” after initial testing. “The AI has been performing very well – it seems the only limit may be our imagination,” said Calvert.

Relativity aiR for Review will have limited availability by the end of 2023, followed by a full general release in 2024.

Relativity also announced the availability of two new RelativityOne-centric solutions applying AI for data privacy, protection, and security – Relativity Personal Information Detect and Relativity Data Breach Response.

Relativity Personal Information Detect (PI Detect) improves finding and redacting sensitive data like PII and PHI. Relativity Data Breach Response (Data Breach Response) analyzes data to rapidly assess and respond to breaches.

In his keynote, Saunders emphasized that Relativity deliberately avoided rushing to deploy AI amidst the hype. He accentuated Relativity’s commitment to responsible AI principles, noting that its tools represent a thoughtful integration of AI targeted at users’ real needs – not hype.

Relativity’s announcements come as legal teams face exponentially growing data volumes and faster case timelines putting pressure on manual review. Many organizations are keen to explore AI automation for investigations and litigation. But concerns around bias, accuracy, and ethical AI have slowed adoption.

By leveraging trusted natural language models transparently and focusing on user needs, Relativity hopes to show a responsible path forward for AI adoption.

With over 300,000 users globally, Relativity’s approach may provide a model for AI integration that builds trust – not just in legal tech, but for any industry dealing with sensitive data.

The new solutions unveiled may truly be considered a Festivus miracle for many in the legal community as the offerings demonstrate that AI-powered legal tech tools are maturing from research projects to practical solutions.
