Background Information: HaystackID was honored last week at Relativity Fest Chicago as a finalist in the 2022 Relativity Innovation Awards for Best Innovation: Solution Provider. nSight Search, HaystackID’s Relativity-enabling technology recognized during Fest, is a new technology tool that may be very useful for cybersecurity, information governance, and legal discovery professionals seeking to enhance search efforts in support of audits, investigations, and litigation.

Relativity Enabling Technology from HaystackID

HaystackID’s nSight Search provides more dynamic results for users running search terms by identifying the number of times a search string appears in each document, thus allowing for analysis to identify overly broad terms, as well as allowing for precision searching. The application also provides a count of documents for the search term hits and calculates a density score based on the total number of search term hits across all documents.

The Creation of nSight Search

The solution was born out of multiple client requests attempting to cut down the overly broad privilege terms and clients who were looking to simplify the measurement of precision and recall of specific search terms in a cyber incident response matter. HaystackID clients have used this solution to help them narrow down search terms during negotiations, identify a more dense population of documents, cut down review population, and as a tool for more targeted review.

Solving eDiscovery Search Result Challenges

nSight Search provides the following reports:

  1. The count of the number of hits for each search term per document
  2. The count of the number of documents that contain search term hits, as well as the total number of hits for each term – for example “term” count: 2 documents: 132
  3. The total number of hits across all terms per document
  4. A density score based on the total number of search term hits across all documents

Document-level search results enable the legal case team to track down a specific document where a search hit occurred, which leads to document-by-document review of the results.

HaystackID’s nSight Search allows for more dynamic results from the application of standard search terms by identifying the number of times a search string appears in each document, thus allowing for analysis to identify overly broad terms, as well as allowing for precision searching. The application allows the user to identify terms that hit on few documents overall but that appear too often in the document to make them meaningful. The application also allows the user to identify terms that potentially hit in every document but only appear once, thus rendering them too broad.

Furthermore, this feature allows for easier calculation of the efficacy of performance for a particular search term. The standard measures are Precision and Recall, which in many instances are difficult to compute before a document-by-document review is completed. HaystackID’s nSight Search allows for a faster calculation for these efficiency metrics, which translates to a more efficient review workstream. nSight Search can be run as an incremental build, which allows for it to run across more than one Search Term Report (STR).

Another useful aspect of HaystackID’s nSight Search results is the calculation of the density score assigned to each document, which allows the legal case team to review documents with the highest density score first in the review. This feature is especially useful in cases involving PII and PHI elements, as it allows the prioritization of documents containing the most PII and PHI upfront. In turn, these items can be reviewed early in the case life cycle to avoid downstream surprises with heavily dense PII documents causing deadline concerns when uncovered near the end of a review.
